Robert Clarges’s father held a valuable crown lease of lands and fisheries in Reading, which was renewed to his mother in 1715.1Cal. Treas. Bks. xxix. 491; xxx. 426. Returned as a Tory for that borough in 1713, though allegedly under age,2CJ, xvii. 480. he was re-elected in 1715, classed as a Tory who might often vote Whig, voting against the septennial bill shortly before his election was declared void on 30 May 1716. He did not stand again. He died apparently before April 1727.3He is not mentioned in his mother’s will, PCC 128 Derby.
