George Clavell came of an ancient Isle of Purbeck family, who had been seated there since the time of Henry VI.1Hutchins, Dorset, i.570. His mother was the sister of Joseph Damer of Winterbourne Came, near Dorchester, and the aunt of Joseph Damer, 1st Earl of Dorchester, and George Damer, all of whom represented the borough. At a by-election in 1752, caused by the death of his cousin George Damer, he was returned for Dorchester on the Damer interest but did not stand again. He died in January 1774.
