Coffin, whose family had been seated at Portledge since the fifteenth century,1Vivian, Vis. Devon, 208-10; Cal. IPM Hen. VII, i. 93. was classed as a Whig in 1715, voting against the septennial bill, for the repeal of the Occasional Conformity and Schism Acts, and against the peerage bill. After contesting Barnstaple unsuccessfully in 1722, he was returned for it unopposed in 1727 on the interest of his friend John Rolle, continuing to vote against the Administration. He did not stand again. He died late in 1766 (buried 3 Dec.).2PCC 33 Isham.
