John Dalrymple, who was said to be the 2nd Lord Stair’s favourite nephew, served for many years as captain in his uncle’s regiment, the 6th Dragoons. When his father chose to sit for the county after the 1727 election, he was brought in unopposed as a government supporter for Wigtown Burghs at the ensuing by-election in 1728. He voted with the Administration on the army in 1732, but, following his uncle and father into opposition, he voted against Walpole on the excise bill of 1733 and the bill for repealing the Septennial Act in 1734. Defeated by a government candidate at the 1734 election, he did not stand again, dying 23 Feb. 1742.
