Goddard, a Tory, whose family had acquired the manor of Swindon in 1563,1A. W. Mabbs, Docs. rel. to Goddard Fam. of N. Wilts. nos. 4, 118. was the first of three men of this name to represent the county in the 18th century. Chosen by the county gentry, meeting at Marlborough on 21 Mar 1722, to take the place of Robert Hyde should the latter be too ill to stand, he was again so chosen on election night, 10 Apr., at Wilton.2Wilts. Arch. Mag. xi. 88, 90, 212. After Hyde’s death, 27 Apr. 1722, he was returned at the ensuing by-election but did not stand in 1727. He died 24 Aug. 1732, leaving an estate of nearly £3000 p.a.
