John Harvey Thursby’s great-grandfather, Robert Harvey, inherited in 1662 the considerable estates of his maternal uncle Hugh Audley, a moneylender. Of these Stockton was devised to John’s grandfather, another Robert, and Cole Park, in Malmesbury, Wilts., to his brother Hugh.1Baker, Northants. i. 11; VCH Warws. vi. 227; Vis Warws. 1682-3 (Harl. Soc. lxii), 61-62. After succeeding to Abington in 1736 he stood unsuccessfully for Coventry at a by-election in April 1737. Returned for Wootton Bassett as a Tory in 1741, he voted consistently against the Administration. He did not stand in 1747 but was returned for Stamford on Lord Exeter’s interest in 1754. He died 1 June 1764.
