biography text

Henry Holt Henley, of a Somerset family, was kinsman to the Henleys of the Grange, Hants,2Hutchins, Dorset, iii. 742. two of whom, John and Robert Henley, were also M.P.s for Lyme Regis. Between 1661 and 1715 his father and great-grandfather represented the borough in ten Parliaments, the former being three times mayor. Returned as a Whig for Lyme Regis in 1722, he was unseated in 1727 but was successful on petition against John Burridge, who, as mayor, had illegally returned himself. In 1728 he was appointed to a lucrative sinecure which had been held by his brother-in-law, Anthony Cornish. He continued to represent the borough, voting for the Administration in all recorded divisions, till his death, 8 May 1748.
