The great-grandson of the 4th Earl of Pembroke, Herbert, who had estates on the Oxfordshire border of Buckinghamshire, was returned as a Tory at a by-election in 1715, voting against the Administration in all recorded divisions. He died 25 Apr. 1721, ‘drowned ... by a slip off a footbridge betwixt his own house and Thame’, supposed to have been caused by ‘an apoplexy’, while
he was walking out alone into his grounds, as he used to do, about ten in the morning. There had indeed about five days before been a very hard bout, which might have helped, at a meeting Duke Wharton had with the Tory gentlemen.1HMC Portland, vii. 296.
