biography text
John Jewkes, a lawyer, of a Petworth family, was returned as a Whig for Bridport in 1730 at a by-election caused by James Pelham’s opting to sit for Newark. In Parliament he voted consistently with the Administration in all recorded divisions. From 1733 onwards he acted as the Duke of Newcastle’s informant and agent in the Petworth neighbourhood for matters relating to the election of the county Members for Sussex.2Jewkes to Newcastle, Add. 32688-32698, passim. For these services, presumably,3Jewkes to Newcastle, 4 May 1734, Add. 32689, f. 218. he was given a seat at the Duke’s pocket borough of Aldborough in 1735, when Henry Pelham opted to sit for Sussex. He died 25 Sept. 1743.
