biography text
A member of an old Lincolnshire family, seated at Bratoft since 1538, Massingberd stood unsuccessfully as a Tory for Boston in 1719. On his return for the county at a contested election in 1721 a Tory wrote:
Sir William Massingberd, indefatigable in the service of his country, has got such a majority in the county election that the Whigs tremble at his name and the measures he has taken in several boroughs in this county to rout that party out of Parliament.1Massingberd Mundy deposit 2/10/19, Lincs. Re-elected unopposed in 1722, he died 1 Dec. 1723.
