The nephew and heir of Dr. Peter Mews, bishop of Winchester (d.1706), Mews in 1708 bought the manor of Christchurch, carrying control of the borough. Returned for Christchurch as a Tory, he voted regularly against the Administration after 1715. His name was sent to the Pretender in 1721 as a probable supporter in the event of a rising.1Stuart mss 65/16. He died 19 Mar. 1726.
