On coming of age Onslow was returned on his family’s interest at Guildford, voting with the Administration. After succeeding to the peerage in 1740 he devoted himself to racing and hunting. Towards the end of his life it was stated that owing to his extravagance he had agreed to be placed by his heirs on a small allowance.1Barlow, Complete English Peerage (1775), p. 277. But when he died, 8 Oct. 1776, he is said to have left a fortune of £18,000 a year.2Gent. Mag. 1776, p. 483.
