Of an ancient Welsh family, Powys succeeded to the manor of Hintlesham, which his father had bought in 1720 from a victim of the South Sea bubble. Returned in 1734 for Orford as a Tory, standing jointly with Price Devereux, he voted against the Government but did not stand again. A man of extravagant tastes, he converted Hintlesham from a Tudor into a Georgian mansion. He died 10 Sept. 1743, so badly off that he is said to have been buried by royal charity at Hampton Court. His widow sold Hintlesham to Sir Richard Lloyd.1Copinger, Suffolk Manors, vi. 56.
