Descended from an old Devonshire family, who had lost their estates in the Civil War, Pratt inherited Wildernesse, bought by his father in 1705. Returned for Sandwich in 1741 on the interest of Sir George Oxenden, who wrote that the neighbouring farmers had ‘certainly carried the election for my partner, Mr. Pratt’,1Namier, Structure, 101. he voted consistently against the Administration. He did not stand again. After his death, 24 July 1770, his property eventually went to the family of his half-brother, Charles Pratt, Lord Camden.
