PRICE, Richard, of Broomfield, Essex.

After the death of John Knight, M.P. for Sudbury, in October 1733, Price, described as ‘a rich citizen’ unsuccessfully asked Walpole to support his candidature for the vacancy, stating that one of the leading men in Sudbury ‘was his factor, did all his business for him, and had promised him to use all his interest for him in the next election’.1Letter Bks. of J. Hervey, 1st Earl of Bristol, iii. 107. Defeated at the ensuing by-election, but returned at the general election after a contest, he voted against the Government on the Spanish convention in 1739 and the place bill in 1740. He did not stand again. Nothing more is known of him except that he leased a house at Broomfield, which he improved ‘so as to be fit for a gentleman’s house’.2Morant, Essex, ii. 78.
