Rider’s mother inherited Boughton Monchelsea from her father, Sir Robert Barnham, who represented Maidstone in Parliament. The family owned premises in Broad Street, London, which were leased to the navy pay office.2Cal. Treas. Bks. xix. 59; xx. 347. Knighted at George I’s accession and returned for Maidstone at a contested by-election in 1716, Rider voted with the Administration, except on the peerage bill which he opposed. In a list of payments in the Sunderland papers,3Sunderland (Blenheim) mss D. II, 4. his brother is shown as receiving a payment of £200 through ‘Mr. Stanhope’, presumably Charles. Defeated in 1722 but returned at a by-election in 1723, he was again defeated in 1727, dying 21 Nov. 1728, before his petition came up.
