Sheriff, Denb. 1705–6.
Roberts was brought in as a Tory by the Myddeltons of Chirk Castle, near which he owned an estate.2NLW, Chirk Castle mss E. 455-60. Absent from the division on the septennial bill in 1716, he voted against the repeal of the Occasional Conformity and Schism Acts and the peerage bill in 1719. His name was sent to the Pretender in 1721 as a probable supporter in the event of a rising.3Stuart mss 65/16. Also in 1721 the South Sea committee of the House of Commons disclosed that he was one of the Members who had been credited with stock by the Company without paying for it, in his case £1,000 at 178 on 1 Mar. 1720, with the right to sell it back to the Company whenever he chose, receiving the increase in the price as ‘profit’.4CJ, xix. 573-8. In 1722 he had to give up his seat to Robert Myddelton, on whose behalf he actively canvassed.5Chirk Castle mss E. 469, 674. He died 4 Sept. 1731, leaving an estate of about £2,000 p.a. to his daughter.6Hist. Reg. 1731, chron. p. 42.
