SCOTT, James (1671-1732), of Logie, Forfar.

Of an ancient Forfarshire family, Scott, who had sat for the county with his father before the Union, was returned unopposed for it as a Whig in succession to John Carnegie, expelled for taking part in the rebellion of 1715. He voted with the Government in the division on Lord Cadogan in June 17171More Culloden Pprs. ii. 173. but against them on the peerage bill in 1719. In an undated list of payments by Sunderland to Members of Parliament or their relations c.1720-1, he is shown as receiving £300.2Sunderland (Blenheim) mss. D. II, 4. Unopposed in 1722, he was attacked at Dundee in 1725 by a mob who ‘accused him as an accessory to the malt tax bill and then fell upon him in so violent a manner that had he not been rescued by some soldiers, who casually were there, he must have been put to death’.3More Culloden Pprs. ii. 266-7. Re-elected in 1727 after a contest, he voted with the Government on the Hessians in 1730 but was absent from other reported divisions. He died in October 1732.
