William Smelt succeeded his brother at Northallerton, voting with the Government. In 1745 he sold the family interest at Northallerton to Henry Lascelles, in favour of whom he vacated his seat by accepting a colonial appointment.1See ‘A London West-India Merchant House 1740-69’, by R.
