biography text

Vernon, a Turkey merchant, was returned unopposed in 1731 and 1735 on the interest of his nephew, Edmund Waller. Presumably a Tory, like his brother, he consistently voted against the Administration, though withdrawing on the motion for the dismissal of Walpole in February 1741. Both seats at Wycombe were required by the Wallers in 1741, but in 1747 he was returned at Ripon on the interest of his son-in-law, William Aislabie, the brother-in-law of Edmund Waller, and classed as ‘Opposition’. He died 4 Apr. 1762, aged 78.
