The Weirs of Stonebyres, cadets of the family of Weir of Blackwood, probably acquired their lands during the fifteenth century. Assessed as a ‘gentleman’ for the poll-tax in 1695,1J. B. Greenshields, Annals of Lesmahagow, 82, 176, Daniel Weir joined his uncle’s regiment about 1702. On succeeding to the family estates he went on half-pay, drilling his tenants regularly during the Fifteen on behalf of the Duke of Argyll.2W. Hunter, Biggar and the House of Fleming, 562, At the 1722 election he was returned for Linlithgow Burghs by the casting vote of the dubiously elected representative of Linlithgow, the presiding burgh.3See LINLITHGOW BURGHS. He died 21 May 1724, before the petition against him was heard.
