biography text
Returned without a contest in 1746, Vernon headed the poll in 1747 as an opposition Whig. In the 2nd Lord Egmont’s electoral survey, c.1749-50, he is shown as ’sure’ of re-election and as a supporter in the future reign. He seems to have agreed to stand at the next election on a joint interest with Robert Tracy, who in calculating the probable cost reckoned that half of the £1200 for ’200 London votes’ would be borne by Vernon.111 Dec. 1753, Add. 32733, f. 421. In the end Tracy stood down but Vernon was returned unopposed. He died 9 Dec. 1771.
