Cecil was classed ‘pro’ by Newcastle in 1747, and again by Dupplin in 1754. He lived a ‘retired life, preferring it to the tumult and bustle of a court from which he would never accept a place’. His time was largely spent in improving his seat at Burghley and collecting paintings, of which he left ‘a superb collection from the hands of the most illustrious artists’.1Gent. Mag. 1793, p. 1213.
He died 23 Dec. 1793.
