The Mostyns were the most influential family in Flintshire, and Sir Thomas and his son represented the county for nearly fifty years without a contest. In 1754 their estate was said to be worth between £2,000 and £3,000 per annum.1Thos. to Sam. Hill, 17 Aug. 1754, Attingham mss, Salop RO. Mostyn was a Tory; but his interest was less in politics than in literature, and he made no attempt to check the Whig leanings of his son and heir. He died 24 Mar. 1758.
