biography text

Townsend did not stand at the general election of 1754, but in 1757, at the by-election caused by the death of Admiral Byng, was returned at the King’s recommendation on the Government interest. Classed ‘Newcastle, pro’ in Bute’s list of 1761, he appears in Henry Fox’s list of Members favourable to the peace preliminaries, December 1762. He was included in Jenkinson’s list of ‘absent friends’ on general warrants, and was classed ‘pro’ in Rockingham’s list of July 1765. He seems never to have spoken in the House, at least after 1754. He died 21 Nov. 1765.
