Anstruther was brought into Parliament by his father, and in February and March 1775 piloted through the House a bill permitting the burgh of Anstruther Easter to levy a twopenny duty on ale for the repair of its bridge and harbour.1CJ, 20, 23 Feb. and 7, 15, 22, 27 Mar. 1775. Apart from this, little is known of his parliamentary activities, and no speech by him is recorded. In 1777 he vacated his seat in favour of George Damer, and did not subsequently attempt to re-enter Parliament.

He died 5 Jan. 1808.
