On 5 Dec. 1753 William Murray wrote to the Duke of Newcastle:1Add. 32733, f. 367.

Lord Rockingham desires me to acquaint your Grace that last Monday everything succeeded at York beyond his expectation. There was a most numerous appearance. They deputed a committee of 12 of the principal inhabitants to desire Lord Rockingham to recommend a candidate upon the Whig interest. He named Sir J. Armytage, and the recommendation was received unanimously.

Armytage supported Newcastle in Parliament. His only recorded speech was on the Minorca inquiry, 25 Apr. 1757.2West to Newcastle [26 Apr. 1757], Add. 35877, f. 363.

In 1758 he went as a volunteer on the expedition to St. Cas, and was killed 10 Sept.3London Mag. 1758, p. 518. But see also Walpole to Conway, 19 Sept. 1758, and London Chron. 19 Sept. 1758. At the time of his death he was engaged to be married to Mary, sister of George Augustus, 3rd Viscount Howe.4Walpole to Mann, 22 Sept. 1758.
