BARRINGTON, John (1752-1818), of Swainstown, I.o.W.

Barrington was returned on the family interest at Newtown. ‘It is hoped’, Robinson noted in his survey for the general election of 1780, ‘that he will be a friend.’ But he voted with Opposition on Lowther’s motion against the war, 12 Dec. 1781, and on Rous’s no confidence motion, 15 Mar. 1782. He did not vote in the division on Shelburne’s peace preliminaries, 18 Feb. 1783, but in Robinson’s list of March 1783 was classed as a ‘connexion of Lord Shelburne’s Government’; voted against Fox’s East India bill, 27 Nov. 1783; and in Stockdale’s list of 19 Mar. 1784 was described as a supporter of Pitt. He voted for parliamentary reform, 18 Apr. 1785, but his name does not appear in any other list before 1789, when he voted with Pitt over the Regency. There is no record of his having spoken in the House in our period.

He died 5 Aug. 1818.
