biography text

Carpenter stood in for Weobley on his own interest against that of Lord Weymouth, and was defeated. He was returned unopposed for Taunton on the interest of his brother-in-law Lord Egremont, whose politics he followed. Hence in the new reign he adhered to Bute, through whom he obtained his earldom.1Carpenter to Bute, 16 Mar. 1761, Bute mss.

He died 9 Mar. 1762.
