In September 1773, and again at the general election of 1774, Cavendish was returned unopposed for Lancaster. In Parliament, like the rest of his family, he voted regularly with the Opposition. In 1778-9, after the intervention of France in the war, he served afloat as a gentleman volunteer, under the command first of his kinsman Captain Robert (Boyle) Walsingham and then of Admiral Keppel.1Rockingham to Portland, 27 June 1778, Portland mss. In 1780 he was returned for Derbyshire in place of his uncle Lord George Cavendish. There is no record of his having spoken in the House.

He died at Naples, 7 Sept. 1781.
