Cope was brought in for Downton in 1754 by his uncle, Lord Feversham, who wrote to Newcastle, 16 May 1756, to demand that his nephew should be promoted at least to the rank of envoy:2Add. 32865, f. 29. ‘It had been better for him not to have been in Parliament, than now he is there not to receive some mark of his Majesty’s favour.’ He died in England on 1 Aug. 1756, before anything could be done for him.
