FRANKLAND, William (1720-1805), of Muntham Court, Suss.

Frankland spent twenty years in Bengal in the service of the East India Company. He travelled extensively in the East, journeying through Persia alone and in disguise.1Sir R. F. Payne-Gallwey, Ped. Frankland of Thirkleby. He followed his brother in politics, and voted consistently in opposition throughout his parliamentary career. He spoke on East India affairs, 18 and 21 May 1773, but there is no record of any other speech. According to his obituary notice in the Gentleman’s Magazine (1805, p. 1242): ‘In his latter years his habits were recluse and studious, and his attention principally directed to improvements in science, and the application of mechanics to manufacturing processes.’

He died 28 Dec. 1805.
