biography text

Hammond was a Southwark brewer, and in his will1PCC 285 Caesar. mentions his brewery in Goat Yard; in a list in the Lowther mss drawn up between April 1754 and March 1755 he is described as a surgeon and justice of the peace in Southwark. He was classed in Dupplin’s list of 1754 as ‘pro’. He seems to have been on friendly terms with Joseph Mawbey and Henry Thrale, to whom he left rings in his will. In 1761 he again contested Southwark, but was defeated.

He died 22 May 1763, leaving a widow and one son.
