Montagu was returned unopposed for Windsor in 1772 with the support of Administration.1North to Guilford [June 1766], Bodl. North mss. In 1779 the Public Ledger wrote that he ‘seldom attends the House, but when he does he votes with Opposition. He is no speaker.’ This, though otherwise correct, seems hardly fair to Montagu in the matter of his attendance: between 1774 and 1782 he voted in 11 out of the 17 divisions for which lists are available. He voted for Shelburne’s peace preliminaries, 18 Feb. 1783; did not vote on Fox’s East India bill, 27 Nov. 1783; and supported Pitt.
He died 25 June 1787.
