Newton contested Beverley in 1754, apparently with the support of the Pelham interest,2Add. 32995, ff. 75-80. but was badly beaten. In 1761 he was returned unopposed. He was not sent Newcastle’s whip for the opening of the session, and was classed ‘doubtful’ in Bute’s list. He was included by Henry Fox in the list of Members favourable to the peace preliminaries, December 1762. Jenkinson in the autumn of 1763 classed him as ‘doubtful’; so too did Rockingham in July 1765 and November 1766, while Newcastle in March 1767 classed him as ‘Tory’. Obviously no one knew much about him, which is not surprising, for there is no record of his ever having voted or spoken in the House. He did not stand at the general election of 1768.

He died 3 Oct. 1803, aged 76.
