biography text
Pole was a merchant and insurer. He was established in London at the latest by 1740, and traded with Africa and the West Indies. Supported by Government he was returned in 1756 unopposed at Liverpool on the corporation interest. In 1761 he stood jointly with Ellis Cunliffe, again on the corporation interest, but was defeated. His successful opponent, Sir William Meredith, described him as ‘an honest, unexceptionable man’.1Meredith to Burke, 28 Oct. 1767. Two speeches by Pole are recorded in a period when reports are very scarce.
He died in October 1779.
