SMITH, John Mansell (b. ?1758), of Chilton Foliat, Wilts.

Smith was returned for Wendover with his father, who purchased the seats from Lord Verney; and followed his father’s political line: he opposed North’s Administration, voted against Shelburne’s peace preliminaries, 18 Feb. 1783, and supported Fox and the Coalition. On 7 May 1783 he voted for parliamentary reform. His only recorded speech was on 22 Feb. 1782 for Conway’s motion against the American war, when he spoke ‘with much diffidence, but extremely to the purpose’.1Debrett, vi. 280.
