Estranged from his father, Knatchbull nevertheless succeeded him as county Member in 1819. At his unopposed election he declared that he ‘would never act but on independent principles ... not wavering, but support those measures which seemed in the interest of the people’. Before standing he had resigned his receiver-generalship for East Kent, suggesting to the prime minister that it might be bestowed on his brother-in-law. He made no mark in his first session in Parliament. He died 24 May 1849.1Knatchbull-Hugessen, Kentish Fam. 164; Add. 38279, f. 347.
