DOTTIN, Abel Rous (?1769-1852), of Gatton Tower, nr. Reigate, Surr. and Bugle Hall, nr. Southampton.

Dottin’s family on both sides were Barbados planters and his grandfather Abel (d.1759) also acquired an English estate in Oxfordshire; his father was sheriff for that county and ‘his ancestors formerly represented the county of Surrey’. He entered Parliament on his kinsman Sir Mark Wood’s interest for Gatton, on condition that he supported administration (which he did). After taking leaves of absence for a fortnight on 8 and 19 Mar. 1819, he voted with ministers against Tierney’s censure motion, 18 May, and for the foreign enlistment bill, 10 June 1819. No speech is known in his first Parliament. In 1820 he contested Southampton, near which he had a country residence, but was defeated. He succeeded at the next election.
