Barne, a barrister, was again returned for Dunwich on the family interest in 1790, but vacated before the first session was out. Since 1788 he had been anxious to procure from Pitt, whose government he silently supported, a commissioner’s place at one of the boards,1PRO 30/8/112, ff. 319, 321; E. Suff. RO, Barne coll. 359/70. and in April 1791 his wish was met. He remained business manager for the family and his aggressive cultivation of their interest at Dunwich fomented a rebellion there in 1810, but it blew over.2See DUNWICH. His brothers did not get on easily with him, but did not doubt his devotion to the family interest.3Barne coll. 359/109, S. to M. Barne, 11 Apr. 1817. In 1818 he offered to resign his place at the tax office: it was accepted in 1820.4Add. 38281, f. 235. He died 19 June 1828.
