BARRINGTON, John (1752-1818), of Swainstown, I.o.W.

Barrington represented his family’s interest in one seat for the borough of Newtown from 1780 until 1796. His support of Pitt’s administration was unobtrusive after 1790; indeed, a letter of his to George Rose of 16 Aug. 1794 implied that ill health had prevented his attendance. By 1791 he had become hostile to the repeal of the Test Act, after previous support of it. He obtained leave of absence for private business on 29 Jan. 1795. He did not seek re-election in 1796, invariably selling the seat thereafter. He died 5 Aug. 1818, whereupon his interest devolved on his brother and heir Fitzwilliam Barrington.1PRO 30/8/111; CJ, l. 104; see NEWTOWN.
