Abercromby served in the Helder, Egyptian and Sicilian campaigns and distinguished himself in the Peninsula, where he served from 1809. After the battle of Waterloo he found no further employment. On the death of his elder brother John he came in for Clackmannan to maintain the family interest. He did not oppose government and was a silent Member. His known votes were in favour of Catholic relief, 9 May 1817, (swayed, it would appear, by Plunket’s speech) and of the suspension of habeas corpus, 23 June; against inquiry into the employment of informers by government, 5 Mar. 1818, and in the government minority on 15 Apr. on the ducal grant.

Abercromby, who was never again in Parliament, died 27 Aug. 1853.1Mackintosh Mems. ii. 263.
