biography text
Cope, after an unsuccessful first bid in 1795, was returned for his county on a vacancy in 1799. He supported the Union, though at first reckoned hostile. He was ‘a distant relative of the Achesons’, who already had a family Member for the county. At Westminster he made no mark, but was listed as a supporter of the ministry. He retired rather than face a contest in 1802. Cope died 5 Dec. 1818, aged 47.1PRO 30/9/13, pt. 2, Irish Members’ list 1801; M.I. St. Mary’s, Weymouth.
