Lord Claude Hamilton was under age when he was returned for his father’s friend Lord Northland’s borough and it is not known whether he took his seat. If so, he would have been expected to support the Portland government. His father’s friends were confident that he would in due course become county Member for Donegal or Tyrone. In January 1808 he was ailing and set sail for Brazil to recuperate: but he died at Madeira in June.
