Mahon was returned unopposed for the county on a vacancy in 1799 and, like his father, who was rewarded with a peerage, and his brother Stephen, supported the Union. He made no mark at Westminster, where, so he and his father claimed, he continued to support government. He was, however, unable to induce the Castle to take his part against the competitive Kingston interest in anticipation of the general election and declined rather than contest the seat in 1802. He subsequently resumed his military career, which prevented him from offering at the next election, when his place was taken by his brother Stephen.
