Weymouth was an élève diplomatique of Lord Clancarty on the Continent after leaving university, but, wrote the latter to Castlereagh, ‘cannot write, and is therefore of no service whatever to me’. Subsequently he was returned by his father for the family borough and gave a silent support to government in his only Parliament. After taking a week’s leave of absence on 10 May, he was in the majorities against Tierney’s censure motion and for the foreign enlistment bill, 18 May and 10 June 1819.
