biography text

Vanneck, ‘a terrible gambler’ in his youth, succeeded his father as Member for Dunwich on the family interest. Like him he was presumably well disposed to government, but he left no trace of parliamentary activity. On 12 Feb. 1819 he agreed with the Barne family, co-patrons of Dunwich, to vacate his seat forthwith and to rent his interest to them for £600 p.a. He never resumed it. He died 10 Aug. 1844, having in 1838 unsuccessfully applied to Lord Melbourne for a British peerage.1Warrenne Blake, Irish Beauty, 85; E. Suff. RO, Barne coll. 359/124.
