Lygon, a Guards officer and veteran of the Peninsular campaign and Waterloo, received £16,000 and an annuity of £3,000 from his father’s estate in 1816.2 PROB 11/1591/169; IR26/697/320 He was returned for Callington in 1818 on Lord Clinton’s precarious interest and gave silent support to Lord Liverpool’s ministry. He was elected again in 1820 but unseated on petition three months later, before he could make any mark in the House. He concentrated thereafter on his military career and served as inspector general of cavalry ‘for some years’ until his death in November 1860.3 Gent. Mag. (1860), ii. 685.
