Taunton | 1432 |
Little is known for certain about the Taunton MP of 1432. Although there was a family of the same name in Somerset (one William Galyot was periodically empanelled on local juries at Taunton in the 1420s and 1430s),1 CIPM, xxii. 460; xxiii. 196, 463. it is possible that John in fact hailed from Hampshire. If so, he may have been the man who is recorded as a juror at Andover in July 1439, and he may have possessed some connexion with the bishop of Winchester, the lord of the borough of Taunton.2 CIPM, xxv. 211, 269. Equally, no definite evidence of the MP’s profession or trade has been discovered, but if he was a lawyer he may have been the man of this name who was admitted to Lincoln’s Inn in the later 1420s.3 J.H. Baker, Men of Ct. (Selden Soc. supp. ser. xviii), ii. 1745. There was also a John Galyet from the diocese of Worcester who jointly with Margaret, his wife, was granted a papal indult for a portable altar in 1426. This may have been the Bristol mercer of that name, who was dead by Aug. 1434, by which date his wid. had married Richard Wright alias Dyer of Wells: CPL, vii. 534; Little Red Bk. Bristol ed. Bickley, 185.
