biography text

Thomas Catteslond’s career is almost as difficult to trace as that of his presumed relative, John*, but he was evidently a local man who by the summer of 1431 acquired a messuage and 12½ acres of land in Guildford and Stoke next Guildford from Geoffrey Mudge† and his wife.1 CP25(1)/232/71/48; CP40/677, rot. 385d. He was still alive in 1444, when he was in dispute with the Guildford grocer John Kingston and a yeoman from neighbouring Ash over an alleged trespass.2 CP40/732, rot. 505. The date of Cattelond’s death is uncertain, but it is probable that the Joan Catteslond who by 1458 had married John Shenfeld the elder was his widow: CP40/788, rot. 406.
